Pilton Ramblers

Details of each walk will be featured both here and in Roundabout Magazine. Get out in the fresh air, get fit and enjoy our wonderful County!

PILTON RAMBLERS will meet at the Village Hall car park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm on Saturday 24th  May for a five-mile circular walk from Blackmoor car park, Charterhouse. This will include a gentle descent of Velvet Bottom before climbing via Rhino Rift to a high point at the wireless station. Then there will be a long descent along Rains Batch back to Blackmoor. Along the way it is hoped to identify Bronze Age quarrying, Roman lead extraction workings and the remains of Victorian lead smelting flues. In fact the route passes through the site of a Roman town, together with an amphitheatre and a fort but the ramblers will have to look very carefully because  little remains of this era. Anyone is welcome to come along.

Pilton Ramblers’ walk for April will be a five mile circuit from Chelynch, climbing Beacon Hill with fine views over Doulting and far beyond.

The return leg will follow the route taken by the Roman legions down part of the Fosse Way which is nowadays walked at a gentler pace than the marching orders of two thousand years ago! Then, passing through the hamlet of Bodden and beside Pitts Wood, the walk will return to Chelynch.

Anyone is welcome to come along – meet at Pilton Village Hall car park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm on Saturday 26th April or outside the Poacher’s Pocket Inn, Chelynch at around 2.15pm                                                 John Wheat 890585

Pilton Ramblers will meet at the Village Hall car park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm on Saturday 15th  March for a leisurely walk of up to five miles. This will include a climb up Glastonbury Tor but the selection of route will depend on the ground conditions after the winter. Come and join them!

                                                                           John Wheat 890585

Pilton Ramblers will meet at the Village Hall Car Park at 2.00 pm on Saturday 22nd February for a local walk. The route to be taken will be dependent both on the weather and the condition of the ground after a wet January but in any case the distance covered will not exceed five miles.

                                                         John Wheat 890585

PILTON RAMBLERS’ last walk of the year will be in the local area and tailored to suit the weather conditions but with a maximum distance of five miles.                                                              John Wheat (890585)

PILTON RAMBLERS’ July walks are at opposite ends of the Mendips. On Saturday 13 July they will meet at Pilton Village Hall Car Park at 2.00 pm (for car sharing) for a three and a half mile easy walk from Nettlebridge through a beautiful, steep-sided wooded valley.

On Saturday 27 July they will set off from Pilton car park at 11.00 am, heading for the start of the six mile circular walk based on Shipham (where an alternative meeting point will be outside the Miners’ Arms in the centre of the village at 11.45 am).

The first part will be through a forested area, leading to a lunch stop at the Swan Inn, Rowberrow before continuing over Dolebury Warren with its Iron-Age fort and fine views across to Wales.

Anyone is welcome to come along!

John Wheat 890585

PILTON RAMBLERS  have a choice of a short or a long walk this month. The first will be on Saturday 15th  June, meeting at Pilton Village Hall car park at 2.30 pm (car sharing) for a three and a half mile ramble in the East Harptree area.

On Saturday 22nd  June they will meet at the same venue at 11.30 am (car sharing) for the six mile walk which was cancelled in March owing to weather conditions. This will start beside the tithe barn at Doulting (11.45) and will follow public footpaths to the Strode Arms, Cranmore for a lunch break before completing the circuit via Chesterblade.

                                                                                      John Wheat (890585)

PILTON RAMBLERS hope you will join them on at least one of their two May walks!

In both cases the meeting point is Pilton village hall car park (for car sharing) and the first one will be an easy three and a half mile ramble from Nunney’s moated castle and along the lovely Nunney Combe (meeting at 2.30 pm on Saturday May 11th ).

If you prefer a longer walk on the Mendips, the start time will be 11.30 am on Saturday 18th May and the six mile ramble will include a stop at the Queen Victoria Inn, Priddy for lunch. Anyone wishing to go direct to the start of the walk should meet at the car park/picnic area at the top of Deer Leap at 12.00 noon. Do not confuse this venue with the National Trust car park for Ebbor Gorge which is only part way up the hill.

This is earlier than usual to allow for a slightly longer circular walk (six miles) and for a break for a pub lunch part way round at the Strode Inn, Cranmore. The route which takes in the villages of Chesterblade and Doulting is not very hilly but there are a few stiles and there could be some muddy patches!

Come along and welcome the spring!                                  John Wheat 890585

PILTON RAMBLERS will meet at the Village Hall car park at 2.00 pm on Saturday 23rd  February for a leisurely walk from the village into the surrounding area and anyone is invited to join them. Pilton Ramblers invite you to join them on their June walk. They will meet at the Village Hall car park (for car sharing) 12.00 noon on Saturday 7th June, an earlier start owing to the ramble being a little longer than usual at 6 miles.

The walk will start from the East Somerset railway car park, Cranmore at around 12.20 and go by public footpaths to a lunch stop at the Poacher’s Pocket pub at Chelynch. From here the ramble will continue past Waterlip to Cranmore Tower tea room where there will be a chance for a stop and the more energetic can climb the 180 steps to the top of the tower for an amazing view. The circuit will then be completed via East Cranmore back to the car park.

PILTON RAMBLERS’ last walk of the year will be on Saturday 22nd November starting from the Village Hall car park at 2.00 pm. It will be along public footpaths and the choice of route will be left until the last moment in order to take account of conditions underfoot but the maximum distance

Pilton Ramblers’ first walk of the year will depart from the Village Hall Car Park at 2.00 pm on Saturday 21st February and you are welcome to come along. 2014

2015

The March walk chosen by PILTON RAMBLERS will follow the disused Somerset and Dorset railway track through the Ham Wall nature reserve on the Somerset Levels.

From here they will select a route along virtually traffic-free lanes or possibly along a grassy bank beside a rhyne. This circuit is chosen because it is almost guaranteed to be mud-free whatever the recent weather, and there is also the possibility of a rest at the Sharpham Tea Gardens.

It is a little longer than usual (5 1⁄2 miles) but hills and stiles are both noticeably absent! If you would like to join theRamblers, they will meet at the village hall car park at 2.00 pm on Saturday 14 March. Alternatively you can meet at the start of the walk at the Railway Inn on the Meare to Ashcott road (2.30 pm) but please telephone if you wish to take this option.

August 2015

August walk will give the opportunity to see Cheddar Gorge in a different light. Rather than looking up the cliff face from the road, the Gorge will be seen from above with people appearing like ants 450 feet below. The five-mile route will follow public footpaths and take a steady and fairly steep climb to the Mendip Plateau and on to the limestone valley at Black Rock.

Then there will be a short climb which opens out onto an exhilarating downhill walk on the south rim of the Gorge with dramatic views. You will be welcome to come along – meet at the Village Hall car park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm on Saturday 22nd  August or, if you prefer to go direct to the start, please ring to arrange a rendezvous.

                                                                              John Wheat  890585

September 2015

We would be pleased to have your company on their September walk - a little further afield and a little longer, requiring an earlier start (11.30 am at the Village Hall Car Park - for car sharing - Saturday 19 September) with a stop part-way round to relax and ‘recharge the batteries’ at a pub for lunch.

The seven mile circuit will start and finish in Bradford-on-Avon and will include two rivers, a canal, an aqueduct, a castle, a country mansion and some lovely, rolling countryside.

October 2015

Pilton Ramblers invite you to join them for a five mile walk in the Binegar area on Saturday 24 October, meeting at 2.00 pm in the Village Hall car park (for car sharing). The route will be along lanes with very little traffic and also along tracks and public footpaths including a crossing of the Iron Age hill fort at Maesbury. We hope to see you on the walk!

November 2015

Our November walk will be in the local area, probably to include West and East Compton, but the final selection of route will depend on the conditions underfoot and, in any case it will not exceed five miles. If you would like to join them they will be departing from Pilton Village Hall car park at 2.00 pm on Saturday 21st November This will be the last walk of the year but they will start again in February.

2016

Last year PILTON RAMBLERS’ walks ventured into Ashcott, Oakhill and Bradford-on-Avon as well as exploring some of the footpaths right on our doorstep, as we will for our first walk of this year. Our numbers did not exceed ten last year and we would love to see some new faces! Anyone from the local area is welcome to join us, not just Piltonians! So why not join us on Saturday 6th February at the Village Hall Car Park (2.00pm) for a local walk of up to 5 miles – the route to be decided on the day according to the conditions.

John Wheat 890585

In October Pilton Ramblers’ were unable to do a walk in the Binegar area owing to heavy rain and so there will be a second attempt at this on Saturday 5 March, meeting at Pilton Village Hall Car Park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm.

In view of the after effects of the winter it might be a good choice because much of the route is along very quiet, mud-free lanes but, in the latter stages, it does take to public footpaths again as it crosses the Iron Age fort at Maesbury. We would love to see you! John Wheat 890585

April 2016

Where near here can you explore the interior of a Neolithic Long Barrow and study how the multiple stone chambers were constructed around five thousand years ago? The answer is Stoney Littleton near Peasedown St John but you will have to go to the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery if you wish to inspect the artefacts found here.

This Long Barrow will be the destination for PILTON RAMBLERS’ next walk on Saturday 9th April, meeting at Pilton Village Hall car park at 2.00 pm (for car sharing). Come along and enjoy some really beautiful countryside on the five mile walk starting at Shoscombe. John Wheat 890585

May 2016

Have you walked through the lovely woodland in Watery Combe or seen the bluebells in Burges’s Combe? Possibly not, and if you don’t know where these beautiful spots are, you can find out by joining Pilton Ramblers on their six mile walk on Saturday 14th May.

Meet them at Pilton Village Hall Car Park at 2.00 pm to share transport to the start of the walk at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, Chewton Mendip.

John Wheat 890585

June 2016

Pilton Ramblers will meet at Pilton Village Hall car park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm on Saturday 11th June for a five mile circular walk from Charterhouse. This will include Velvet Bottom and one of the highest points of the western Mendips and, if weather conditions are good, there will be some superb views.

You are welcome to come along!

John Wheat 890585

July 2016

Pilton Ramblers’ July circular walk of about six miles will be a repeat of one done three years ago but this time the route will be in the opposite direction.

They will set off from the centre of Wells for a gentle uphill route to Milton and New Cut to Pen Hill and then via a long wooded descent through Biddle Combe back to Wells. If you would like to come along you will meet them at Pilton Village Hall car park (for car sharing) at 2.00 pm on Saturday 9 July.

If it is more convenient for you to meet at Wells please agree the meeting point with a phone call.

John Wheat, 890585

August 2016

There will be no walk this month owing to falling numbers (possibly the effect of the holiday season) but it is hoped to re-start in September.

John Wheat 890585

Sept 2016

This month we will meet at the Village Hall car park at the earlier start of 11.00 am on Saturday 24th September for a walk to Croscombe for a pub lunch at The George, returning to Pilton via Worminster. It will be a

little longer than recent walks but the lunch stop will restore all the energy required. Everyone is welcome!

John Wheat 890585

November 2016

Pilton ramblers started in Spring of 2010 with a variety of walks in the immediate area and others a little further afield such as Cadbury and Bradford-on-Avon. Our numbers have always been unpredictable with a record turn-out of fifteen. This year, however, we have had so few walkers that I have decided to close down the group and only re-start it if there is an assured revival of interest.

So, thanks for your company, exploring our lovely countryside. John Wheat 890585
